Our Curriculum Intent
Governors and staff believe that the personal development of pupils, spiritually, morally, socially and culturally plays a significant part in their ability to learn and achieve. We therefore aim to provide an education that provides children with opportunities to explore and develop their own values and beliefs, spiritual awareness, high standards of personal behaviour, a positive caring attitude towards other people, an understanding of their social and cultural traditions and an appreciation of the diversity and richness of other cultures. This is embedded throughout all aspects of school life through the use of our Christian Values such as love, respect, forgiveness, truthfulness, joy, acceptance, trust and understanding. We promote a growth mind-set, helping the children to understand that learning is worthwhile, hard work is necessary and that we can learn from mistakes.
Our curriculum is geared to achieving our goal to ensure that our pupils are ‘good citizens’ and ready for the next steps by teaching and embedding the required knowledge and skills at each year group level with clear progression across the school. Wherever possible, learning opportunities involve active learning with the children accessing learning outside of the classroom in the local and wider community, it addresses issues within society, such as ways to address climate change and develops a social conscience truly fulfilling our school’s mission statement that “As God’s children, we touch the lives of others through our thoughts, words and actions”
The school offers a broad, balanced and differentiated curriculum covering all areas of the National Curriculum and our aim is to provide a curriculum that meets the needs, interests and abilities of all children. We do our utmost to maximise success for all children by giving them the best teaching and learning experiences.
This curriculum comprises of the core subjects – English, Mathematics, RE, Computing (ICT) and Science; the foundation subjects –Design Technology, History, MFL, Geography, Art, Music, Physical Education and Health & Relationships Education. At times, subjects will be taught as discrete subjects but whenever possible they will be taught as part of a termly topic enabling the children to make links between ideas and develop the schemata needed for learning. We have a strong emphasis on developing the communication skills in the Foundation Stage; however, this continues across the school as we endeavour to help the children build and develop a rich vocabulary.
The main focus for Key Stage 1 is reading and we aim to establish a love of books and reading; however, as reading is essential for the children to achieve, we have a strong focus on reading throughout the school and each year group has key texts that they will read during their time at school.
An extensive range of extra-curricular activities are provided both after school and during the school day; sports, learning the ukulele, choir, languages, art and WOW weeks are provided by members of the school team, while external experts are engaged to further enhance the cultural experiences that are on offer for the children.
We encourage the children to take part in fun activity days such as World Book Day and the school engages readily with the local community to provide a wide range of experiences for the children – Healthier Fleetwood, Fleetwood Carnival and Celebration of Music to name a few. All these activities help to engage the children in their learning, making it fun and enjoyable and enriching their lives.
