Progression in Learning - Reading Comprehension (VIPERS)
In Years 1 to 6, we teach reading comprehension through 'VIPERS' lessons, which focus on the key areas children need to understand in order to improve their comprehension of texts. VIPERS is an acronym to aid the recall of the 6 reading domains from the National Curriculum. The domains focus on the comprehension aspect of reading and not the mechanics: decoding, fluency, etc. They stand for:
V - Vocabulary
I - Infer
P - Predict
E - Explain
R - Retrieve
S - Summarise
This document outlines the progression in learning in VIPERS lessons from Years 1 to 6.
