As the children in Year 4 had their early learning disrupted through Covid, they have not secured a lot of the basic spelling and phonics knowledge they should have done in Year 1 and 2.
We are working on trying to ensure that these gaps have some time spent on in class, alongside learning new skills so that they don't have the gaps in learning extended. Children MUST read regularly and continue to learn basic spellings of words, using phonics and their sounds to help read unfamiliar words and for spelling too.
Games can be useful for continuing to secure some knowledge, such as their phonics. We also use sites to help develop their reading skills and comprehension at their own pace.
