Curriculum

We use the White Rose Maths scheme across the school, from Nursery to Year 6, ensuring a structured and consistent approach to our teaching of mathematics. The resources provide a clear and progressive framework that aligns with the National Curriculum, and breaks down mathematical concepts into small, manageable steps - building on existing understanding.

Each lesson follows a consistent structure of teacher instruction and modelling (I do), guided practice (we do) and independent tasks (you do). This ensures that pupils receive quality teaching, supported practice and time to consolidate their learning. A deep understanding of concepts is also supported through the use of the Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract (CPA) model. The CPA approach helps learners understand abstract concepts first through handing concrete resources and then recording pictorial representations before moving on to working with abstract symbols (numbers and operations).

In addition to the daily maths lesson, children in our Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 classes also receive regular short burst 'Mastering Number' sessions, which aim to develop sound basic number sense. If children have an automatic retrieval of number facts, without reliance on counting, they can focus on problem solving and applying these reliable, known facts, rather than wasting time and effort on counting – which is also open to error.
